Court remands rabbi accused of rape until end of trial
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleJerusalem Magistrate’s Court orders a rabbi apparently caught on tape admitting to the rape of his female followers to remain in custody until the end of legal proceedings against him.
Rabbi Eliezer Berland was extradited from South Africa in July, and arrested upon his arrival at Ben Gurion Airport. He is charged with multiple counts of sexual assault.
The court says that the 79-year-old Berland poses a flight risk, and expresses concern that he may attempt to obstruct justice.
Berland’s attorneys say they will appeal the decision to keep him in custody.
