Egypt snubs Liberman on envoy’s Revolution Day bash

Egypt failed to invite Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman to this evening’s Revolution Day party at the home of its ambassador to Israel, Channel 10 says, while Netanyahu and Rivlin are both in attendance.

Revolution Day is celebrated in Egypt on July 23, and marks the 1952 military coup that led to the overthrow of King Farouk and the creation of a republic.

Channel 10 says Liberman’s office confirmed that he had not received an invitation.

This is the first time since 2009 that Israeli leaders have been invited to the annual bash, and is a further sign of a recent thaw between the two states. The hawkish defense minister has made some anti-Egypt remarks in the past, including a threat to blow up the Aswan Dam that runs across the River Nile.
