Suspected Somali extremists attack Mogadishu restaurant

A suicide car bomber rams the gates of a restaurant near a beach in the capital Mogadishu, and gunmen fight their way into the building, a police official says. It is not immediately clear if there are any casualties.

The attackers may have some hostages inside the restaurant, which is popular with the city’s elite and government officials, Capt. Mohammed Hussein says. The attackers open fire on the customers of the restaurant, known as Liido Seafood, before storming the restaurant in Mogadishu, he says.

There is no immediate claim of responsibility for the ongoing attack, which bears the hallmarks of the Islamic extremist group al-Shabab.
