Man arrested for chasing people with an axe in an Ashdod park, police say

Police say man resisted arrest, tried to attack responding officers and has been taken into custody for interrogation, may be sent to psychiatric evaluation

Police arrested a man in Ashdod on Wednesday evening for allegedly chasing a passerby with an axe in a public park in the coastal southern city.

In a statement, Israel Police said that after receiving a report about a man chasing another person with an axe in the park, officers responded to the scene and arrested a suspect.

According to police, the suspect is in his 20s, and was found by police with the axe in his possession.

The man then resisted arrest, tried to attack the responding police officers with the axe, and was apprehended after officers overpowered him, police said.

The axe was seized and the man was taken to the local police station, the statement added.

Police were questioning the man and were set to decide whether to request to extend his remand, as well as whether to refer him for a psychiatric evaluation, upon finishing the interrogation, the statement said.
