Palestinian teenager drowns off Haifa coast

17-year-old from West Bank town of Jenin pulled unconscious from the sea following searches by police, who launch probe into incident

Police on Tuesday opened an investigation after a Palestinian teenager drowned off the coast of Haifa.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service said it received a report overnight that a young person had been pulled unconscious from the sea at a beach in the northern city. Paramedics called to the scene pronounced the 17-year-old dead.

The teenager was identified by Hebrew media as from the West Bank city of Jenin. He was not named in reports.

His disappearance was reported by friends who accompanied him to the beach and his body was found after police searched for him using a helicopter and naval units, according to reports.

His body was taken to the Abu Kabir Institute for Forensic Medicine for examination.

Police launched an investigation into the incident, according to Army Radio.
