Family of fallen US-born soldier marks Memorial Day in Israel
The parents of Max Steinberg, killed in Operation Protective Edge, endow a scholarship at Ben-Gurion University in his memory

The family of Max Steinberg, a lone soldier from Woodland Hills, California, who was killed in Gaza in July, attended a Memorial Day ceremony at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Wednesday, where they established an endowment in Max’s memory, a statement from the university said.
The Max Steinberg Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund was founded in partnership with Max’s parents, Stuart and Evelyn, and his siblings, Paige and Jake.
It was launched by Jessica Sillins, vice president of the American Associates of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, at The Times of Israel gala in New York in February.
After leaving the comforts of the US and immigrating to Israel, Max Steinberg enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces, where he insisted on serving in the Golani Brigade.
He was 24 when he was killed.

The Steinberg endowment will provide scholarships at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, in perpetuity, to combat reservists from the Golani Brigade and other units, with first preference going to lone soldiers — soldiers from the Jewish Diaspora who serve in the IDF.
The Steinbergs will be part of the decision process to ensure that the recipients reflect Max’s values and vision.
“We are delighted to know that Max’s legacy will be connected to a university and scholarship program that grants opportunity and promise to the soldiers that have put their lives in harm’s way for the people of Israel,” Stuart Steinberg said in February.
“We know that Max cared deeply for his fellow soldiers and that he would be whole-heartedly supportive of a program that allows soldiers to pursue their passions and create a great future.”
