American Jewish comedian and writer Sarah Silverman will soon have to think up a masculine name for herself… or will she?
In a new campaign to draw attention to the wage gap and promote equal pay for men and women, Silverman sets out to show us that if she were to undergo gender reassignment surgery to become a man, she could earn an additional $11,000 every year.
In the video, titled “Sarah Silverman Closes the Gap,” Silverman can be seen choosing a new penis for herself, saying goodbye to her breasts, and, well, providing shocking facts and figures showing just how much less women earn “in almost every profession” simply because they are female. With her trademark wit, Silverman tells viewers that throughout a woman’s life, she loses almost $500,000 in wages, quipping, “That’s a $500,000 vagina tax!”
She then announces that she has decided to “become a dude,” since “in the grand scheme of things, it’s way less expensive than the money I’ll lose” by having female genitalia.
After she chooses a new penis for herself (“Do you have anything a little more, um, European? Oh my god, I have boots that would look amazing with this!”), she announces a campaign to raise “the trillions of dollars the rest of you ladies” — those who aren’t willing to take matters into their own hands and have a sex change, that is — “will be cheated out of during the course of your careers.”
She says that if the full amount ($29,811,746,430,000, to be distributed by check among all women in America) is not raised, the money that does come in will be donated to the National Women’s Law Center (“I know, it sounds like an old ladies’ gym”), an NGO dedicated to advocacy for gender equality — and one of the creators of the campaign.
Just after the comic bids farewell to her breasts (“it’s been a wild ride”), a link appears onscreen directing viewers to the Equal Payback Project, a crowdfunding campaign dedicated to “paying women back the money they lose just for having a vagina” — not in the form of a check, of course, but through the NGO’s activities, which include advocacy, legislation, and education. Nearly $80,000 (of the, well, $30 trillion) has been raised so far.
But trust Silverman to have the last word. As the video comes to a close, she can be heard asking from behind the hospital curtain, “Does this penis make me look fat?”
Though Silverman has been accused of making light of gender reassignment surgery and the transgender experience in the video, you’ve got to admit, she does have balls.
