Elderly man killed in Rishon Lezion hit-and-run

Police launch manhunt for driver, whose 82-year-old victim was en route to synagogue for morning prayers

An elderly man was killed on Monday morning in a hit-and-run accident in Rishon Lezion, police said.

The 82-year-old man was walking to morning prayers in a local synagogue between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., and was hit while crossing Mordei Hagetaot Street at a pedestrian crosswalk.

An ambulance crew declared his death at the scene before 7 a.m. Monday morning.

Police were searching the scene of the crime for signs that might point to the car and the identity of the driver.

“This driver left an elderly man lying in the street. I’m calling on him to do the right thing and turn himself in to the closest police station,” the district traffic police commander, Superintendent Roi Shefer, told Army Radio. “We’re going to find you,” he said.
