A woman from the Tel Aviv suburb of Herzliya won an Israeli lottery for the third time on Tuesday, bringing the total sum of her winnings to NIS 625,000 (some US $170,000) and giving new meaning to the saying “third time’s the charm.”
Israel’s national lottery, Mifal Hapayis, hands out prizes to holders of membership cards on a regular basis. The unnamed women won NIS 125,000 in her latest lucky break. In December she was awarded NIS 250,000, the same sum she collected in her first lottery win in 2003.
The member’s lottery is conducted based on membership cards, with a computer drawing random ID numbers from its database. Though the fortunate lady won three times, Mifal Hapayis told Channel 10 that each winning day was based on a different card owned by the woman — who holds four.
“I kept hoping that the day would come that I’d get the phone call again,” the winner told Channel 10, saying she was out buying plants when her cellphone rang. There’s “always hope for yet another call” with good news, she said.
