A man riding an electric bicycle was killed in a hit-and-run by a concrete-mixer truck in Tel Aviv Sunday, police and medics said.

Paramedics pronounced the 60-year-old man dead at the scene, according to a Magen David Adom ambulance service statement.

Police said that after an hour and a half, they located and arrested the driver, who had fled to nearby Holon.

Police have begun an investigation into the incident.

According to Or Yarok, a road safety advocacy group, the man was the 11th person in Israel to be killed in a traffic accident involving an electric bicycle this year.

During the same time period last year, four riders had been killed.

There have been 155 people killed on the country’s roads in total since the start of the year.

Yaniv Yaakov, CEO of Or Yarok, blamed the rise in accidents on those responsible for road safety and the lack of measures to deal with electric vehicles since they were introduced over the past decade.

“We can’t fight road accidents just with publicity and advertising. We need to boost police presence on the roads, pave safe riding paths for riders, and increase awareness and enforcement of helmet-wearing during every ride,” he said.
