The funeral of Shimon Peres at Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl on September 30 brought together an unprecedented gathering of world leaders.

They were paying their respects to the last of Israel’s founding fathers, a former president and prime minister whose centrality to Israel originated even before the foundation of the state.

Also mourning, however, were Peres’s family, his loved ones — creating a ceremony that was at once global in resonance and immensely personal.

In these photographs, Elad Malka immortalizes striking moments from an extraordinary farewell to a unique individual.
