False terror alarm leads crowds to flee Tel Aviv port

Police say fight that broke out at seaside café caused someone to cry ‘terrorist’ and sparked a brief panic

The peacefulness of a Shabbat morning was briefly shattered at Tel Aviv’s port Saturday, when a large number of people fled the area following a false terror alarm.

Police said visitors to the port — which on weekends is typically bustling with activity at its seaside restaurants and cafés — became panicked after one or more individuals yelled out that they had seen a terrorist.

Officials later determined that an altercation between costumers and a waiter had taken place at one of the port’s cafés, triggering the false alarm.

It was not clear who had called out “terrorist” or why they were led to do so.

According to the Ynet news website, police said that all those involved in the fight were detained and were set to be questioned, and stressed that the reports about a terrorist attack were entirely false.
