Israeli wins gold at European Judo Championships

Arik Zeevi beats Georgian opponent in up-to-100 kg final in Chelyabinsk, Russia

Arik Zeevi won a gold medal on Saturday at the European Judo Championships in Chelyabinsk, Russia.

The Israeli beat Georgian opponent Lavan Georgiolani for the crown in the final of the up-to-100 kg division. Zeevi had beaten Georgiolani several times on previous occasions.

It was the Israeli’s fourth European Championships title and it came just 90 days before the start of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where Zeevi will be competing.

President Shimon Peres congratulated Zeevi on his win. The Israeli team also picked up a silver and two bronzes at the championships.
