Vice President Biden, in Israel to attend the Sharon funeral, will meet with Israeli leaders during the visit. He is slated to meet with President Peres in the afternoon, and will have dinner at the Prime Minister’s Residence in Jerusalem’s Balfour Street with Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Biden and Netanyahu are expected to discuss the ongoing peace talks with the Palestinians, together with the Western powers’ nuclear deal with Iran. Biden is accompanied in Israel by Jake Sullivan, his national security adviser, and Maher Bitar, director for Israeli-Palestinian affairs for the National Security Council.
After touching down at Ben Gurion International Airport at 5:56 a.m., Biden was met on the tarmac by US Ambassador Daniel Shapiro, Shapiro’s wife Julie Fisher, the Foreign Ministry’s Deputy Director General for North America Ambassador Liora Herzl, and an Israeli government protocol officer, Emmanuelle Amar.
Biden arrived at Jerusalem’s David Citadel Hotel at 7:05 a.m.
