Massive workers’ strike in south called off

A massive strike in southern Israel to protest the layoffs of hundreds of employees at an Israel Chemicals’ bromine plant has been cancelled.

The strike was expected to shut down businesses from the port of Ashdod to the Red Sea resort town of Eilat, according to Histadrut chairman Avi Nissenkorn.

Plans for the layoff have been frozen and union representatives and employers are set to meet again in two weeks to resume talks.

The strike at the plant is set to continue.
