Orange security bracelets an ironic touch

Sharon’s closest relatives, colleagues and friends are given orange bracelets by the Shin Bet’s security staff to better identify them during the closely guarded ceremony.

The color, participants said, was an ironic touch. Orange was the color adopted by the opposition to Sharon’s 2005 withdrawal from Gaza, and has a special place in Israeli political iconography as the color of the settler right.

“Whoever gave us these bracelets showed determination, but no sensitivity,” one bracelet recipient tells Maariv.

The comment is a riff off the IDF’s orders at the time of the withdrawal to pull settlers from their homes “with sensitivity, but with determination.”
