US sanctions Turkish ministers over detainment of US pastor
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleThe US Treasury Department slaps Turkey’s interior and justice ministers with sanctions over the continued detainment of a US pastor.
“Pastor [Andrew] Brunson’s unjust detention and continued prosecution by Turkish officials is simply unacceptable,” says Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in a statement. “President Trump has made it abundantly clear that the United States expects Turkey to release him immediately.”
White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders says US President Donald Trump instructed the Treasury Department to implement the sanctions.
“We’ve seen no evidence that Pastor Brunson has done anything wrong and we believe he is a victim of unfair and unjust attention by the government of Turkey,” she says at the daily press briefing.
