A man was shot dead in the northern port city of Haifa in the early hours of Tuesday, after a woman was seriously injured in an earlier apparently unrelated gun attack in a different city.

The Haifa shooting happened on Barzilai Street in the Hadar neighborhood and the victim was taken to Rambam Medical Center in the city, where doctors declared him dead.

Police opened an investigation into the shooting.

Hebrew media reports said the man was in his late 30s or early 40s.

The victim was known to police and investigators suspect the shooting was related to the criminal underworld, the Ynet website reported.

Police were investigating the possibility that the shots were fired from a passing car, according to the report.

The shooting came hours after a woman was seriously injured by gunfire as she drove with her young daughter in the Tel Aviv suburb of Bat Yam.

The woman did not appear to have been targeted in the shooting, but was likely a victim of mistaken identity or stray gunfire from underworld criminal activity, according to initial reports.

She was hospitalized in serious condition at Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital with a gunshot wound to her head.

The girl, 4, was unharmed physically but suffered emotional trauma from the incident.
