A 40-year-old man was stabbed to death overnight Wednesday in Jaffa in what police said appeared to have been a criminal, rather than terror-related, attack.

The incident took place shortly after midnight in the city’s HaShaon Square, a popular nighttime hangout, police said in a statement.

The victim was taken to the Wolfson Medical Center in Holon in critical condition where he was declared dead shortly after arrival.

Police said that they were searching for the perpetrator, who fled the scene immediately after the attack. No one had been arrested as of Wednesday morning, according to police, who said they had opened an investigation into the incident.

Police said the incident was being treated as a criminal attack and appeared to show no hallmarks of nationalistically motivated terrorism.

On Monday, an Israeli Arab man was stabbed by a Palestinian assailant in the nearby town of Petah Tikva and was hospitalized in serious condition, in what police said was a terror attack. The assailant, a 21-year-old Palestinian from the West Bank town of Qalqilya, was arrested and taken for questioning by police.
