The incident came on the heels of warnings by security officials that a third intifada was already under way in the West Bank, particularly after the Palestinians’ UN statehood bid and the resolution of Operation Pillar of Defense, both in November. Shin Bet security service data released in early January showed that December 2012 witnessed a 400% spike in the number of terrorist attacks in the West Bank and Jerusalem compared to August.
According to the report, the increase is due in part to a 68% rise in what the security agency refers to as “popular” terror attacks — mainly attacks involving Molotov cocktails. Ten Israelis were killed as a result of terror attacks in 2012, compared to 22 in 2011 — but unlike in previous years, no Israelis were killed in the West Bank.
