A woman was found dead in an apartment in the West Bank settlement of Ma’ale Adumim, in what police are investigating as a murder-suicide attempt, according to Hebrew media reports.

The woman was found dead in her apartment on Monday, the eve of Sukkot.

The woman’s death was initially investigated as a suicide, but police later suspected the husband’s involvement, according to Haaretz.

After police tracked the man down, he at first attempted to flee, but then shot himself in front of officers, critically wounding himself, according to reports. He remains hospitalized in Beersheba in serious condition, Haaretz reported.

The woman worked for the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum in Jerusalem. The museum told Walla that it is “shocked and pained” by her untimely passing and was “extending a warm and supportive hand to a family that has lost such a significant figure.”

Activists have long complained that not enough is done to prevent instances of domestic violence in Israel. In July, Finance Minister Avigdor Liberman ordered NIS 55 million ($17 million) be immediately allotted to efforts to prevent and treat the issue of domestic violence.

The money has been earmarked to partially fund the Welfare Ministry’s National Plan for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, which was approved in 2017, but had seen less than half the designated funds transferred for its implementation.

A June report from the state comptroller found that inadequate funding and chaotic policies for identifying and dealing with domestic violence are hampering efforts to curb the issue. In 2019, five women were murdered by their partners while last year the figure jumped to 13, the report said.
