Police on late Tuesday night shot dead a suspect when he pulled a gun on officers patrolling south Tel Aviv as part of an operation targeting drug related crime in the area.
The incident took place close to midnight after officers from the Israel Police Special Patrol Unit stopped four men on Petah Tikva Street in Holon. They opened fire on the man after he drew a firearm, aiming it at them as he attempted to flee, according to a police statement.
The man was taken to Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital in serious condition where he was declared dead. Police have not released the identity of the man but said he was from the predominantly Arab Israeli Jawarish neighborhood in the city of Ramle.
The other three suspects were arrested after they too tried to flee.
No policemen were injured during the incident.
The incident is being investigated by the Police Internal Investigations Department, the police statement said, adding that this is standard procedure.
