Two young teens were arrested Wednesday after attempting to rob a bank possibly armed with M-16 rifles, police said.

The two, aged 12 and 13, allegedly attempted to knock over a branch of Bank Leumi in the central Israeli city of Rishon Lezion, according to a police report.

The two demanded money from one of the tellers, but allegedly fled the scene empty-handed after the clerk managed to escape her booth, Ynet reported.

Police detectives in Rishon Lezion arrested the two boys at their homes a short while later and located the firearms, which were sent to a lab for testing.

Police later said the weapons may have actually been toy guns altered to look like M-16s.

Neither boy has a criminal record, Israel Radio reported.

The two were detained at a police station overnight, and investigators will determine Thursday afternoon whether to request an extension on the kids’ remand.
