An Israeli man on Friday left his two young daughters in the car as he ran into a supermarket near the northern West Bank village of Nabi Elias to pick up some pre-Sabbath groceries, before returning shortly after to find the vehicle was stolen with the girls inside.

Police located the car after it crashed into a guardrail on Route 55. Officers who pulled up to the vehicle noticed the girls in the back seat, while the driver’s seat was empty, according to a police statement.

The girls did not require medical treatment.

Police said that an initial investigation found that the suspected car thief decided to abandon the car after noticing the children inside and “the vehicle collided with the guardrail.”

Officers were engaged in a manhunt for the suspect.
