Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday promised to expand the range of services available to Holocaust survivors.
At a special cabinet meeting dedicated to the issue of Holocaust survivors, ahead of Thursday’s Holocaust Remembrance Day, Netanyahu told cabinet ministers that for survivors, time was running out.
“Time is short, and unfortunately survivors are leaving this world,” Netanyahu said. “We want to remember the six million victims, our brothers and sisters, and act on the lessons of the Holocaust to ensure the future of our people.”
Before the meeting, the prime minister toured a retirement home in Jerusalem and met with a number of survivors there.
Today there are about 198,000 Holocaust survivors in Israel, the vast majority of whom are over 75 years old. Of those, 20,000 need daily assistance, according to the Foundation for the Benefit of Holocaust Victims.
