DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran’s media have issued conflicting reports on whether lawmakers have abandoned a push to summon President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for questioning — a potential major humiliation for the leader in his power struggle with clerical hardliners.
The official IRNA news agency quoted Tuesday pro-Ahmadinejad lawmaker Mohammad Hossein Farhangi as saying that 11 colleagues withdrew their request. This could mean not enough lawmakers now back the demand, which would make Ahmadinejad the first Iranian president to face public grilling in parliament since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
But lawmaker Ali Motahari told the Hamshahrionline news website that the IRNA report is a “sheer lie” and the demand cannot be withdrawn.
Ahmadinejad could face questioning later this week.
