Oliver Stone’s son converts to Islam

Oliver Stone’s son, who in the past has expressed support for Iran’s nuclear program, has converted to Islam.

Sean Stone, the 27-year-old son of the Oscar-winning filmmaker, adopted the religion yesterday during a visit to the country, whose nuclear program he has defended in the past.

“The conversion to Islam is not abandoning Christianity or Judaism, which I was born with,” Stone told the AFP news agency, referring to his Jewish father and Christian mother. “It means I have accepted Mohammad and other prophets.”

Like his father, the younger Stone has a history of making provocative political statements. He told Hollywood news site The Wrap last year that Iran should be allowed to develop nuclear weapons, and that telling its leaders otherwise is “like someone coming to your house and saying the father shouldn’t hit the kids.” (Forgive our confusion, but telling a father to stop hitting his kids actually sounds pretty good to us.)

The senior Stone, for his part, also has a tendency to take inflammatory positions. He caused controversy in 2010 by saying Hitler had been “an easy scapegoat” for World War II, and later that year apologized for claiming that “Jewish domination of the media” was the reason Hitler had stayed so prominent in the public consciousness.
