A Palestinian court sentenced exiled former Palestinian official Mohammad Dahlan to three years in prison for allegedly embezzling $16 million as a cabinet minister, an official said Wednesday.
Dahlan, considered a major political foe of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, was sentenced in absentia on Wednesday, the official said.
Wednesday’s ruling came after a constitutional court upheld Abbas’ right to strip Dahlan and four of his allies of their parliamentary immunity.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case with the media.
Dahlan has lived in exile since falling out with Abbas in 2010.

Since the rift, Abbas has taken a series of steps to block Dahlan’s possible return to a West Bank leadership position, including keeping his supporters from attending a Fatah congress in Ramallah last month.
Egypt and other Arab states have urged Abbas to allow Dahlan’s return.
Dahlan, the former head of the PA security forces in Gaza, has been living in the Gulf since he left the Palestinian territories several years ago. He has for many years been a bitter rival of Abbas, who in 2011 accused of him murdering late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
