JTA — The spokeswoman for the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem was shot with a rubber bullet by an Israeli soldier at a West Bank demonstration.
Sarit Michaeli was hit in the leg while attending a protest of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank on Friday in the Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh. She was taken to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, where the bullet was removed.
Protests take place each Friday in Nabi Saleh, and B’Tselem regularly sends representatives to monitor the protests and other Israeli military activity in the West Bank.
“The military must investigate this incident immediately,” said Daniel Sokatch, CEO of the New Israel Fund, which funds B’Tselem, in a statement. “Documenting the human rights environment in the Occupied Territories is absolutely necessary for a democracy that is legally and morally responsible for daily life on the West Bank.”
