Conference of Presidents finds its Sugarman

Organization elects lawyer and former ADL head Robert Sugarman to lead group for next year

The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations elected Robert Sugarman, a lawyer and former national chairman of the Anti-Defamation League, to take the helm of the group for the next year, the group said Wednesday.

Sugarman, voted in unanimously, will replace Richard Stone as the organization’s head.

“The Nominating Committee was greatly impressed by his depth of knowledge, level of commitment and outstanding judgment regarding matters of importance to the Jewish community,” said Alan Solow, a past conference head who now chairs the nominating panel. “He is an outstanding consensus builder who is the ideal choice for this critical leadership position.”

Sugarman is also a past president of Hillel in New York, where he is based.

The conference is an American advocacy group for Jewish and Israeli interests made up of the top players in the Jewish organizational and philanthropic world.
