Gilad Shalit on Monday visited the Ethiopian anti-discrimination protest tent located adjacent to the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem. The tent is located on the same spot where Shalit’s family and its supporters spent years demanding that successive Israeli governments achieve the return of the kidnapped soldier from Hamas captivity.
Shalit’s father, Noam Shalit, who plans to run for a Knesset seat as part of the Labor Party in the next elections, recently visited the tent and said problems confronting Ethiopian Israelis “cannot be swept under the rug.”

On April 15, Supreme Court Justice Zvi Zilbertal urged the Jerusalem Municipality and a group of Ethiopian protesters to reach an agreement regarding the voluntary evacuation of a protest tent before the beginning of Memorial Day on Tuesday evening.
Representatives of the protest rejected the proposal, saying that the intervention by the Supreme Court in effect enables further inaction on the part of the government.
