The Israel Defense Forces began dismantling a protest camp on a contested area of land east of Jerusalem before protesters could establish concrete structures on the site, the Palestinian Ma’an News Agency reported on Monday.

The encampment was set up close to the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Abu Dis in the so-called E1 corridor that lies between Jerusalem and the adjacent Israeli settlement of Ma’ale Adumim to the east.

According to the report, the IDF used tear gas on protesters and brought in three bulldozers to remove the camp that has been demolished several times in the past.

Israel has, in the past, approved plans to build housing units on the area. The construction will create geographical continuity between the capital and its eastern suburb, a move that the US and European countries have warned against.

Four Bedouin families in the area have petitioned the High Court against the construction, claiming that the land is theirs.
