Israel’s national lacrosse team ended its championship run Wednesday night with a crushing 18-3 loss to the Netherlands at the European Championships in Amsterdam.

The Israeli team, established by a number of Anglo immigrants less than two years ago, made its first appearance at the tournament and cruised to the quarterfinal undefeated in its first four matches.

On Monday, Israel’s cinderella team squeaked by heavily-favored Wales 14-13 to earn its place in the quarter-final.

“We’ve come to achieve everything we set out to do [at the tournament],” team captain Mathew Markman told JTA after the win. “Everything from here on out is icing on the cake.”

On Thursday the Israeli team will face Scotland in a battle for fifth place out of the 17 teams taking part in the annual event.
