Sharpshooter Sergy Rikhter aims to hit the bull’s-eye

Sunday was a disappointing day for the blue-and-white delegation to London 2012. Tennis player Shahar Peer was one of six athletes knocked out of competition without advancing a single round. On Monday sharpshooter Sergy Rikhter and sailor Nofar Edelman will try to do better.
Peer was eliminated by Russian player Maria Sharapova. Though the Israeli managed to win the first game, she was no match for the Russian who won in two sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Israeli swimmer Nimrod Shapira Bar Or finished in 21st place in the 200 meter freestyle swim, a heat in which he had reached the semi finals in ’08. Fellow swimmer Yaakov Tomarkin failed to make it through to the semi finals in the 100 meter backstroke.
Judoka Golan Pollack was eliminated by a French opponent in the first round of the under 66kg category.
Gymnast Valeria Maksyuta had a sub-par performance and didn’t advance beyond the qualifying round. She received low marks in all four categories.
In badminton, Misha Zilberman was eliminated, ending the first Olympic quest by an Israeli in the game.

On the third day of the games, sharpshooter Sergy Rikhter will try to show that sharing the junior world record and winning medals in the European and World championships were no fluke. He’ll attempt to prove he was just adjusting his sights for the Olympic bull’s-eye.
Nofar Edelman will be the first Israeli to set sail in the 2012 games, as she tests the waters near the Isle of Portland.
Remember: Event times are listed as they appear in London — please make the right adjustments (Israelis add 2 hours; US East Coast residents subtract 5).
