Jerusalem court remands accused shooter

The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday remanded the suspect in Tuesday’s double murder at a Jerusalem law firm for an additional eight days.

Security guard Getagon Tadesse is suspected by police of shooting attorney Natan Gorno, 51, and his daughter Yamit Gorno, 26, over a financial dispute.

Tadesse, a 49-year-old father of four from Ma’ale Adumim who immigrated from Ethiopia in 2004, was in the midst of a divorce and had hired Gorno to represent him, the police said, quoted in Walla News. Tadesse was reportedly dissatisfied by the divorce proceedings and, according to the preliminary investigation, arrived at Gorno’s office in the Clal building in an attempt to get his money back. He allegedly shot Gorno and his daughter with his weapon at close range.

Tadesse was apprehended by police shortly after the incident, and although he offered contradictory versions of exactly what happened, authorities said the man claimed he didn’t plan to shoot the two when he arrived at the office.

The suspect has no history of mental illness and the security firm where he works said that he had passed all the required tests to work as a security guard and possess a firearm. Despite having passed his employer’s mental exam, the judge on Wednesday ordered Tadesse to undergo a psychiatric examination.

In response to Tuesday’s shooting and another in Beersheba in May which both involved off-duty security guards, the Comptroller’s Office said Wednesday that it would seek better regulation of firearms issued to private security firms.
