EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) — Egyptian security and medical officials say explosions rocked the northern Sinai town of Rafah as militants struck a weapons depot, killing at least five soldiers and injuring 10 others.

Officials said that the attacks took place early Thursday morning when suspected jihadist launched mortar shells at an army camp in Rafah. Hours earlier, officials said that an explosive device killed an army soldier in the nearby town of Sheikh Zuweid.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

Jihadists are waging near-daily attacks targeting army and police in Sinai where the Egyptian government is battling an insurgency by an affiliate of the Islamic State group.
