Netanyahu says timing of next elections ‘still an open question’

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tells reporters that his government is “making efforts” to solve coalition crises and prevent early elections.

Speaking at a press conference announcing the next Bank of Israel governor, the premier says “we are making efforts to solve the issues, including the [ultra-Orthodox] draft problem.”

Regarding the possibility of calling elections earlier than November 2019, Netanyahu says: “If we find a way, we would be happy to continue until the end of the year. That is still an open question.”

Netanyahu also defends Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman in his public spat with Jewish Home leader Naftali Bennett, saying Bennett’s criticism was “unnecessary” and should have been voiced in cabinet meetings.

He also says the ongoing corruption probes against him aren’t affecting his daily activities.

“I am performing well, working a lot and not taking my eyes off the target.”
