Sharon receives standing salute from IDF’s major generals

At a brief, special gathering at the Latrun Armored Corps Museum and Memorial, some 15 serving IDF major generals salute the casket of Sharon, the former major general, defense minister and premier.

The casket has now been returned to the transport vehicle and will be continuing its ride south to Sharon’s ranch in a few minutes, where the former prime minister is to be buried in a more intimate funeral ceremony starting at 2 p.m.

Many of the senior officers are accompanying Sharon to the funeral. Eight IDF major generals will carry Sharon’s casket to bury it.

Sharon fought and was almost killed by Jordanian forces in the 1948 battle for Latrun. As our military correspondent Mitch Ginsburg has written, that battle was a defining moment for the young military commander.
