Passengers seeking to take the train to and from Jerusalem now need to register in advance following a new directive to maintain safety and security, unrelated to Israel’s external conflicts.
According to the new directive issued by the Israel Police earlier this month, each train on the Jerusalem line will be limited to 1,200 passengers to ensure a quick and safe response in the event of an emergency or evacuation on the mostly underground tunnel route, Israel Railways says. The Yitzhak Navon Jerusalem train station is located 80 meters underground.
Due to the restriction, each passenger taking the Jerusalem train is required to issue a travel voucher with a barcode either online, via customer service, or at a train station in addition to purchasing a ticket. As trains to and from Jerusalem operate every half an hour, they don’t reach a capacity of 1,200 passengers per train on regular days, Israel Railways says.
