Police say that there is enough evidence to indict the former chairman of the Ashdod Port workers’ union, Alon Hassan, on charges of extortion, money laundering, corruption, bribery and obstruction of justice, according to a Wednesday statement.
The investigation of the Ashdod Port corruption allegations confirmed that Hassan used his influence to secure port contracts for private companies owned by his associates in exchange for bribes or financial kickbacks, the Ma’ariv daily reported, citing police.
Following a year-long undercover investigation, Israel’s anti-corruption police raided the Ashdod Port in May and arrested 15 port employees for suspected participation in the corruption ring.
Police have gone to court to ask for a freeze on NIS 13 million in undisclosed assets that were uncovered during the investigation. Evidence collected in the investigation is slated to be passed to state prosecutors in the coming days.
