Suspects escape after police forget to put car in ‘park’

Officers in Galilee forced to direct attention to runaway vehicle in embarrassing incident making the rounds on social media

It was a scene that could have easily have been taken from one of the Police Academy movies. Two men suspected of involvement in a hit-and-run incident managed to evade capture on Friday when officers who had forgotten to put their cruiser in “park” before pursuing them on foot had to rush back to it when it began to roll down the road.

During the embarrassing incident, which was videotaped and widely disseminated on social media, the suspects in the hit-and-run, fleeing police in their car, lost control of the vehicle, which then careened into the sidewalk in the Galilee village of Kabul.

They got out and made a run for it, ahead of police who arrived just a moment later in a pickup truck.

While one individual quickly escaped, a second was initially caught. However, he too fled when officers were forced to direct their attention to their runaway vehicle.

“This incident involved a vehicle suspected of carrying out a hit and run and then subsequently entering the village. There are two local suspects and police are investigating the incident,” Israel Police spokeswoman Luba Samri told The Times of Israel.

Police declined to comment as to whether the suspects were eventually caught.
