UN chemical weapons expert holding talks in Turkey
Swedish specialist Ake Sellstrom meeting with doctors who treated alleged victims of nonconventional weapons attacks in Syria
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — The head of a UN investigation team was scheduled to meet Turkey’s foreign minister Thursday for talks expected to center on Syria’s alleged use of chemical weapons.
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said Swedish chemical weapons expert Ake Sellstrom was due to meet Ahmet Davutoglu in Ankara.
Syria has refused to allow the team into the country to investigate the allegations.
A UN diplomat told the AP in New York on Wednesday that Sellstrom was in Turkey, reportedly talking to doctors who treated victims of chemical use, and is expected to produce an interim report on his findings.
The diplomat also said Britain and the United States have notified the United Nations of 10 incidents of alleged chemical weapons use by the Syrian government.
