Chief of General Staff Moshe Dayan passes his title to Haim Lascov during a 1958 ceremony (Screenshot of newsreel footage from YouTube)
After winning fame for his victory in the Sinai Campaign, General Moshe Dayan resigns as chief of general staff in this newsreel from 1958.
During a ceremony in Jerusalem, he hands over the position to General Haim Lascov, who also fought in Sinai.
Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion looks on as Dayan beams, one eye hidden beneath his famous eye-patch.
“General Dayan lost his eye leading a British attack in Syria in the second world war,” the narrator adds, “while his successor was also serving the British cause as a volunteer with the British army.”
