Woman killed in Kiryat Ata apartment, suspect is her mentally disturbed brother
Paramedics find victim with serious head wounds apparently caused by assault with hammer; sibling arrested at nearby park
A woman died Wednesday from heavy blows to the head, with the Israel Police arresting her brother, who suffers from mental illness, police said.
She was the second woman to die by homicide in the country since the beginning of the year following a fatal shooting the day before.
Magen David Adom paramedics called to an apartment in the northern city of Kiryat Ata attempted without success to resuscitate the woman, 49, and declared her dead.
Her brother apparently attacked her with a hammer and then fled, according to Hebrew media reports.
It was not immediately clear who notified rescue services about the injured woman.
Officers arrived to collect evidence and later arrested the brother, 50, at a nearby park, the police said.
The incident came one day after Sabrine Hamed Abu Suliman, 35, was shot dead in Ramle. Hamad, a mother of three from Lod, was taken in critical condition to the hospital, where she later died.
Three suspects were arrested overnight in connection with the shooting. Two are brothers from Lod in their 40s and the third is a 20-year-old from Ramle.
All three were to be brought for a remand hearing later Wednesday. Police said they were investigating the motive behind the killing.
Meanwhile, a 52-year-old man was stabbed in Haifa on Wednesday morning, police and paramedics reported.
Medics took the victim, in moderate condition, to Rambam Hospital in the city.
Police said that an investigation was opened and officers were at the scene of the stabbing to collect evidence.
