A 28-year-old bank robber was seriously hurt when shot by a pursuing police officer in Zichron Yaakov in northern Israel on Wednesday.

The young man tried to rob a Discount Bank branch on Hadagan Street, armed with a large knife. After obtaining a few thousand shekels from a teller, he fled to a nearby house.

Police units rushed to the area and began searching the neighborhood. An officer spotted the suspected robber in the yard of a house.

The man turned on the officer and threatened to stab him with his knife, according to police. The officer shot the young man, hitting him in the groin and stomach.

Magen David Adom medics treated him at the scene, then took him to Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in nearby Hadera.
