Panetta: I hope Gantz is right about Iran

US secretary of defense responds to IDF chief’s statement that Tehran will be denied nuclear weapons

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz believes that Iran will be thwarted — he didn’t say how, or by whom, in Independence Day comments on the issue — if it pursues nuclear weapons. United States Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta hopes Gantz is right.

“I hope he’s right and that he knows something I don’t know,” Panetta was quoted as saying in reports carried by Israeli media overnight Thursday.

Panetta, who was on an official visit to the South American country of Chile, added that he had no specific knowledge of any Iranian decision, either to pursue or not to pursue nuclear weapons.
