A mayoral candidate in the central town of Ness Ziona failed to stop recording in time when she uploaded a campaign video to social media on Thursday, and could be heard seemingly telling voters to “die” at the end of the clip.

In the selfie video she uploaded, Galit Avinoam declared that she would champion the issue of education as mayor and stressed that she would not join incumbent mayor Shmuel Boxer’s coalition if she loses the October 31 election — apparently reacting to claims she would do so.

After signing off with a smile, Avinoam let the phone down while muttering “die,” an epithet that can be more loosely translated as “go jump in a lake” or “go f**k yourself.”

The clip of Avinoam went viral on Friday, leading her to issue a clarification video in which she claimed Boxer was behind its widespread dissemination, while insisting she had not been referring to voters but rather “to those behind slanderous spin campaigns” against her.

Responses to Avinoam’s original video poured in on Friday, with one Twitter user writing, “On the one hand — it’s a blunder. On the other hand — no one, including in the city, would’ve known who she was otherwise.”

Another user tweeted, “I don’t understand the big deal. Every resident of Ness Ziona wants to die, and she simply wants to serve the residents.”
