Education minister says his budget won’t be cut

Education Minister Shai Piron (Yesh Atid) on Sunday indicated that budget cuts instated by Finance Minister Yair Lapid to rein in Israel’s NIS 39 billion deficit would not affect his ministry.
Piron said the Education Ministry budget wouldn’t be reduced, teaching hours wouldn’t be slashed and teachers wouldn’t be fired.
Still, speaking at an education conference in Tel Aviv, Piron said some plans that were supposed to be implemented over the next few years would likely be put on hold to help with the budget reduction.
He added that he intended to establish a national education council whose aim would be to disconnect education from politics.
“The goal is to see the return of high standards in schools, to teach values and to invest great effort into achieving these goals,” said Piron.
