New Clinton emails come from Anthony Weiner probe

According to New York Times, federal officials discovered new emails in a separate review of the former NY Jewish congressman

WASHINGTON — The FBI dropped a political bombshell Friday when it launched a new investigation into Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s emails.

The new emails came from a sexting investigation of former New York congressman Anthony Weiner, a US official said. Weiner is the estranged husband of Huma Abedin, a longtime Clinton aide who now is a top official on her campaign staff. According to the The New York Times, the emails were found on a computer they had jointly used. The couple announced in August they were separating.

Federal law enforcement has been conducting a separate investigation of sexually explicit text messages Weiner sent a 15-year-old girl, and reportedly discovered correspondence relevant to its probe into Clinton’s emails during her tenure as secretary of state.

In a letter sent to congressional leaders, FBI Director James Comey said that new emails have emerged, prompting the agency to “take appropriate investigative steps” to review information that flowed through the private email sever.

He explained said his team would attempt to “determine whether [the emails] contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance.”

Within minutes of the announcement being made, the US presidential race felt the shockwaves, with Republican nominee Donald Trump lauding the move and suggesting it could resuscitate his deteriorating campaign.

“I have great respect for the fact that the FBI and the [Department of Justice] are now willing to have the courage to right the horrible mistake that they made,” he said. “This was a grave miscarriage of justice that the American people fully understand. It is everybody’s hope that it is about to be corrected.”

“A great day in our campaign just got better,” he added.

Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta responded with incredulity that the FBI would inject itself into the race at this stage of the process.

“It is extraordinary that we would see something like this just 11 days out from a presidential election,” he said in a statement. “The Director owes it to the American people to immediately provide the full details of what he is now examining. We are confident this will not produce any conclusions different from the one the FBI reached in July.”
