A 10-year-old girl was critically injured on Monday evening in a large explosion on a street in the northern city of Haifa.

Large numbers of police and rescue services converged on the scene on Hehalutz Street minutes after the explosion shook the port city.

A woman, 40, was also lightly injured in the incident, and a teenage boy was left in shock.

The girl was evacuated to the Rambam Medical Center for treatment.

The blast erupted from a closed store during the evening, Channel 2 reported.

Initial investigations focused on a gas balloon explosion as being the likely cause of the disaster, and not criminal activity.
